1. Prepare your devices

Change the default passwords for your devices. A strong password is the best line of defense against unauthorized access. If possible, use multi-factor authentication for all accounts.

  • always use a Virtual Private Network (VPN)

  • use strong passwords & enable passwords on ALL your devices

  • turn off Bluetooth and location when not in use

2. Be extra careful in public

Avoid lending or leave your devices unattended. Consider using special pouches or wallets with RFID-blocking technology.

  • avoid using public Wi-Fi, computers, or even public charging stations

  • bring your own cable, and charge your devices in a wall socket

  • do not charge from another device, someone else’s cable or a power bank

3. Enable device tracking i.e. “Find my Device”

  • Both Google and Apple offer similar services that can locate a stolen or lost device. In order for these to be used however, some preparation ahead of time is required.

  • The remote wipe feature can be used to delete your personal information on the device, in case it gets stolen or lost.

4. Surveillance

Depending on your holiday destination, the government can try and monitor your devices and activities. Different countries have various levels of scrutiny – make sure you research your travel destination when making the decision where to spend your holidays.

5. Sit back and relax? Don’t overthink!

When all is said and done, don’t forget to enjoy your vacation too. Your data and devices can never be too safe, but that doesn’t mean you need to spend all vacation trying to secure them.
